Title: Losing Yourself

Losing Yourself

Have you ever been out of your element? Have you ever been anonymous? Have you ever been invisible to others for a while? Did it feel like you lost yourself?

Recently while walking and jogging around the Houston area, I realized something. I realized that in Houston I’m not Pastor David. I’m just some random guy walking and jogging around a neighborhood trying to get some exercise. I wasn’t Gena’s husband or my children’s father to those who were walking and jogging near me. My identity was fully hidden or actually nonexistent to these folks. I had effectively lost myself. Even worse…all I consider to be “me”…my identity…was lost on these random, anonymous souls.

What an awkward time! However, in that awkwardness came the feeling of what Christ might mean when He encouraged us to deny ourselves (Luke 9). Maybe in that space of separation from our personally perceived self is where we can find who we really are. Maybe losing ourselves means finding who we really are.

I choose to find that space more often…to lose myself…that I might find myself.
