Discomfort!
Last Sunday, I shared a passage from Luke where Jesus informs the disciples of impending conflict due to the fire that will reside within them…the fire of the Gospel…the fire of the Holy Spirit. If you attended, you may have found the sermon difficult or challenging. Jesus tells His disciples that the closest relationships in their lives just may become the most conflict ridden. This sermon may have even made you mad…it made me uncomfortable. There have been numerous times in my ministry when I have been asked to share a difficult text, a challenging thought, or a radical call. It is so uncomfortable for me as the Lord deals with me all week long. I feel the sting of my own desire to flee challenge. I feel the conviction of my own selfishness and fear of transformation. Becoming a Kingdom person over being a Christian Club member has truly become a challenge for me. Everything within me says, “Run for the hills, it’s about to get uncomfortable.”
I have found that when I am uncomfortable, convicted or challenged, I need to ask a simple question, “What’s being threatened within me?” Is it my sinfulness, selfishness, addiction, pride or convenience? Or, am I angry for godly reasons? When I put my finger on that, I find that discomfort becomes the catalyst for becoming a Kingdom person. Instead of running for the hills, I am choosing to fall under the weight of discomfort in order to be molded by my Savior. Join me?
